Verbal Assessment practice

Verbal tests are some of the most used aptitude tests you can come across during an assessment. These tests include different categories that use text to measure your ability to understand, analyze and interpret information.

Verbal capacities can be measured in various ways. Your vocabulary, grammatical skills, comprehension, and critical thinking ability are examined by verbal tests.

For example, to test your vocabulary and understanding of the English language, in some verbal categories you must choose the right synonym or antonym for a given word. In other tests, you must complete verbal analogies. These tests provide an employer an insight into your ability to communicate in the workplace.

Furthermore, Syllogisms tests measure your capacity to choose the right conclusion from given statements. With these tests, an employer can estimate your ability to reason with information and draw the correct conclusions.

In some jobs, an employee needs to work with long texts to gain information and make decisions based on this information. To assess your ability to handle written information, and use this information, employees use verbal reasoning tests. With these tests, an employer can get an insight into your efficiency filtering out the right information and reasoning logically.

The Verbal Preparation Package offers the right preparation for all tests an employer can use to assess your verbal capacities. The package consists of the following tests:

  • Verbal Analogies
  • Antonyms
  • Vocabulary
  • Syllogisms
  • Verbal reasoning

Verbal Analogies

Verbal Analogies Tests are designed to measure a candidate’s ability to recognize relationships between ideas, think methodically and fluency in the English language.

A Verbal Analogy is a word problem comprised of two different pairs of words. In the test, the word problem is set up to reveal one set of words first. This pair of words is related to each other in some way. Then the problem gives you the first word of the second pair, and it is up to you to complete the second pair by choosing the second word out of the answer options. However, this second word must be related to the first word in the second pair in the same manner that the first pair of words is related to each other. To solve a Verbal Analogy, you need to find that relationship.

The answer in the example above is "Flatterer." Slander and defame are synonym words referring to a false and defamatory statement or charge, sycophant and flatterer are synonym words used to describe someone who praises people.

Antonyms

An antonym is a word which is of contrary meaning to another - buy is an antonym of sell. In an Antonyms test, candidates have to choose the correct opposite word (antonym) from a list of possible answers. Antonym Tests are standardized psychometric assessment tests that provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s knowledge of the English language.

In this Antonyms question, you must choose the correct opposite for the given word “Withdraw.”  The meaning of "withdraw" is “to pull back, move away or backward.” Thus, from the given options, the word with a contrary meaning is “Advance” which means “to move forward.”

Vocabulary

In a Vocabulary Test, you are asked to select the word that best matches the meaning of a given word. These tests provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general vocabulary size.

Syllogisms

A syllogism is a type of logical argument composed of three parts, being two premises (a major premise and a minor premise), and a conclusion inferred from the provided premises. A premise is a proposition that is used as evidence in an argument, while a conclusion is asserted by the logical result of an argument based on the relationship of the stated arguments. Remember to always only focus on the information provided in the premises and conclusions; don’t use general knowledge when solving syllogism questions. Syllogism tests are standardized psychometric assessment tests that provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s deductive and logical reasoning skills.

In the example question above, only conclusion II and III are correct.

Conclusion I is invalid because one can picture a situation where some rivers are beautiful while the statements hold. No rivers are beautiful.

Conclusion II is valid. No oceans are rivers, or no rivers are oceans.

Conclusion III is valid. All oceans are beautiful, and at least some beautiful are oceans.

Conclusion IV is invalid because no Conclusion can be made that at least some rivers are beautiful or otherwise.

In the picture below it is visualized how the premises can be interpreted, and how the conclusions can be drawn. By drawing these diagrams about every premise, it is much easier to interpret the premises and draw conclusions.

Verbal Reasoning

A Verbal Reasoning Test assesses your capability to understand, analyze and interpret written information. Verbal reasoning tests are usually written in one paragraph or section, followed by a few questions or statements. These questions or statements should be answered with “True,” “Not True” or “Cannot Say,” this is the case in the example above.

The Verbal Reasoning Test basically comes down to reading comprehension. The test provides a better/additional insight on the expected work level of the contestant. It also provides a more accurate image of the contestant than just the CV or a job interview. Therefore, the verbal reasoning test is used to test, with or without other assessment tests, which candidate is best suited for the job. Other than testing for the recruiting of new staff, the verbal reasoning test may also be used to measure the development of the existing staff of an organization.Verbal-Reasoning-Test-Example-Question

The answer is “Cannot Say” because the text says, “Wie van de Drie" was broadcast by RTL among others.” Therefore, it is impossible to know if the show was broadcast on other stations.
