Application process

When applying for a job at BMW you will have to complete the BMW online application. This online application form contains standard application details, information about your previous work experience, and your qualifications. You will also be asked some specific questions relating to the minimum criteria for the position. If this is successful, BMW will usually ask you to take part in a telephone interview.

When your telephone interview was a success, BMW will usually invite you to attend the BMW assessment centre. At this assessment centre, you will be asked to perform several different tasks and activities. In most cases, you will be asked to do a written exercise or a situational judgement test. Usually, BMW also asks you to complete Numerical, Verbal and Logical reasoning tests. Furthermore, you will usually have more than one interviews with different members of the HR team, and management team.

In a situational judgement test, several situations will be presented to you and you will have to pretend to be present in that specific situation. With that in mind, you are going to have to respond or react to these situations.

An SJT operates with four different answer models:

Based on a scenario you will get to see several work-related situations.

  • Most/least likely to perform: You have to evaluate the situations and choose a response that is accurate and within the range of ‘most likely to do’ to ‘least likely to do’.
  • Ranked responses: In this type of response you will be asked to categorize the options as one that seems most effective, one that seems second most effective, one as third most effective and one as least effective.
  • Most/least effective responses: In this type of response you will be asked to choose the response to the situation that seems 'most effective' to you and the one that seems 'least effective'.
  • Rated responses: In this type of response you will be asked to sort the possible responses to the situation by very effective, effective, slightly effective, not effective and counterproductive. Each option can only be used once.

In a numerical reasoning test, candidates are required to answer questions using facts and figures presented in statistical tables (work with percentages, proportions, fractions, ratios, estimations and currency conversions). Numerical reasoning tests are one of the most commonly used aptitude tests that come up during a job application. Numerical reasoning tests are standardized psychometric assessment tests that provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general numerical aptitude. These tests are designed to measure a candidate’s ability to make correct decisions or inferences from numerical or statistical data. It is intended to measure the ability to work with numerical data in a realistic workplace context.

In a verbal reasoning test, it basically comes down to reading comprehension. The test provides a better/additional insight on the expected work level of the contestant. It also provides a more accurate image of the contestant than just the CV or a job interview. Therefore, the verbal reasoning test is used to test, with or without other assessment tests, which candidate is best suited for the job.

In a logical reasoning test, the candidate’s ability at skills such as how to interpret patterns and/or the relationships between shapes is assessed. It is up to the candidate to select the answer that best fits the missing symbol in a given grid of symbols.
