Logical Assessment practice

Aptitude tests are used to measure a test taker’s abilities. One of the abilities that are often tested is your non-verbal logical reasoning ability. These tests present you with non-verbal or numerical information, in the form of shape sequences in logical patterns. These tests are designed to measure your analytical and logical skills. You are asked to manipulate and analyze abstract information. Your abilities that are represented in logical tests are independent of your language skills or prior knowledge

Logical tests measure skills that are important for a variety of functions where complex problem solving is required. These skills can be improved by training, so it is recommended to practice for your assessment. The Logical Preparation Package offers an extensive range of tests that are often used in assessments to test your logical reasoning skills. The Logical Preparation Package consists of the following tests:

  • Abstract Reasoning
  • Diagrammatic reasoning
  • Inductive Reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning
  • Venn Diagrams

Abstract Tests

Abstract reasoning tests are widely used within selection processes. They assess a candidate’s general intellect ability to reason logically. In this test, you need to show your ability to draw assumptions and conclusions based on information supplied in the form of symbols and/or matrices.

In an abstract reasoning test, you will be asked to identify a missing item, a diagram of a figure that completes a certain pattern of logic, usually in the form of a matrix.

The right answer to the example question above is D.

From left to right, the arrow rotates each column 45 degrees clockwise.

Diagrammatic Reasoning

These tests are designed to measure a candidate’s analytical, decision making, logical and abstract reasoning and critical thinking abilities. Diagrammatic Reasoning Tests display a series of operators and their outputs. The candidate’s task is to infer a set of rules and to apply them to new situations. Candidates will not be required to use any prior knowledge, and the questions on the actual test will not vary depending on the role or specific industry where the candidate is recruited for.

In the Diagrammatic Reasoning question above, you need to choose the symbol that replaces the question mark. You do this by inferring the rules and sequences of the symbol as the following solution explains in detail.

Inductive Reasoning

Inductive Reasoning Tests are standardized psychometric assessment tests that provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s problem-solving abilities. This test is designed to measure a candidate’s ability to work flexibly with unfamiliar information and find solutions. People who perform well on Inductive Reasoning Tests tend to have a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically.

In this Inductive Reasoning Test question, you must look at the movements and changes of the shapes and look for patterns. For this example, the correct answer is D.

Pattern 1: The thick line turns clockwise to the next point of the star.

Pattern 2: The dot turns clockwise to the point of the star one after the next one.

Logical Reasoning

Logical Reasoning Tests provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general problem-solving ability. This type of test usually does not require numerical or verbal skills, but there are different variations out there that do. Logical Reasoning Tests are designed to assess a candidate’s ability at skills such as how to interpret patterns and the relationships between shapes.

In the Logical Reasoning Test question above, you must choose which one of the given options best fits the missing symbol in the grid. You do this by inferring the rules and sequences of the diagram as the following solution explains in detail. In this question, the correct answer is C.

Rule 1: From left to right, the star moves in a vertical line. This pattern continues onto the next row.

Rule 2: From left to right, the triangle moves in a clockwise direction. This pattern continues onto the next row.

Spatial Reasoning

Spatial Reasoning Tests are nonverbal, standardized psychometric assessment tests that provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s ability to mentally re-arrange, rotate and manipulate shapes or objects without physically touching them. These tests are often used in technical sectors (such as engineering) but also in the military.

Spatial reasoning is essential for solving everyday problems, such as using a map and compass, merging into high-speed traffic, and orienting yourself in your environment. Other examples of tasks that require visual-spatial ability are determining the size of a box and how many objects fit in it, and using mirror images.

Spatial ability is also essential in many fields of study, such as mathematics, natural sciences, architecture, astronomy, engineering, and economic forecasting.

In the example above, the right answer is D. You can see why in the explanation below, with the use of the circles you can compare the sides that should be adjacent.

Venn Diagrams

A Venn Diagram (also called primary diagram, set diagram or logic diagram) is a diagram that shows all possible logical relations between a finite collection of different sets. In a Venn Diagram Test, the candidate is given three elements. These elements may or may not have some inter-linkage or relationship. It is up to the candidate to select the answer that correctly visualizes the relationship between the given elements.

The right answer to the example question above is C.

Catholicism is a form of Christianity and Christianity is a form of faith. So the inner circle represents "Catholicism," the middle circle represents "Christianity," and the outer circle represents "Faith."

Practice makes perfect! You will see that through practise your performance will improve. Familiarizing yourself with psychometric tests is the first step to success. Through practice, you will get a clear picture of what these tests are, what they look like, what they measure, and what the testing conditions will be.
