The Barron’s Test of Mechanical Aptitude has its origins in the armed services. It is used to measure the mechanical reasoning ability of candidate’s and is available in computerized as well as pencil and paper form.

Wiesen Test of Mechanical AptitudeThe Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA) measures mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn how to use and maintain equipment/machinery. It is designed to help predict performance for specific occupations that involve operating, maintenance, and servicing of tools, equipment, and machinery. This test is 30 minutes long and has 60 questions. The WTMA test is scored in two ways; a raw score and a percentile ranking. Stenquist Test of Mechanical Aptitude: The Stenquist Test of Mechanical Aptitude is a slight variation from the standard mechanical comprehension aptitude tests, such as Bennett and Wiesen. The Stenquist test consists of a series of problems presented in the form of illustrations. Based on these provided illustrations candidate’s are required to determine which illustration fits in with another group of illustrations. Even though this is a different way of measuring mechanical comprehension, it still measures the same skills as the other tests.

CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension TestThe CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension Test is a widely-used test that is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand basic mechanical principles and their application to devices such as gear, levers and miscellaneous machinery. This test is used for job positions that require an understanding of mechanical principles and their application, but also the usage of equipment, hardware, and machinery. Tips and tricks to ace your Barron’s Test of Mechanical Aptitude

 Keep in mind these useful tips and tricks when you solve Barron’s Test of Mechanical Aptitude Tests: 

  • Read the question and instructions accurately. Even though this seems logical, often candidates miss out on critical information.  
  • Concentrate on the details and look for an answer in a methodically way. 
  • Try to look at only one aspect of a shape at a time. Look at orientation, size, location and movement to decode the pattern. 
  • Stay calm; you will do great! If you’re stuck and can’t spot the pattern try starting at the end of the sequence and work backwards. This might give you a new perspective. 
  • Multiple-choice tests use so-called ‘distractors’ as answer possibilities. These distractors are answers options that are deliberately similar to the right answer; in other words, the answer possibilities are designed to test if you read the question and provided information correctly.
